About Montjuïc Botanical Gardens

The Botanical gardens, Barcelona, Jardí Botànic are situated on a mild slope of the Montjuïc Park, and contains plants from five regions of the world that have a Mediterranean climate (Australia, Chile, California, South Africa and the Mediterranean).

The Montjuïc Botanical Garden is part of the Barcelona Natural Sciences Museums, Museu de Ciències Naturals de Barcelona, And the purpose of the Botanical garden is the conservation and display of collections of Mediterranean plants from all over the world.

The botanical gardens have about 1,500 different species of plants and trees. The garden of the Jardí Botànic offers a view of the city of Barcelona.

Note: The Montjuïc botanical garden should not be confused with the Montjuïc Historic Sensorial Botanical Garden behind MNAC. These are separate gardens in an abandoned quarry.

Montjuïc Botanical Gardens History

The Montjuïc Botanical Garden was inaugurated in 1999. I first visited the garden in 2006 and since then the plants and trees have become well established and grown considerably. The images in the gallery are from a couple of years ago in Spring.

Before this plot of land became a Botanical garden it was, up until the 80s a small town of squatter shacks until the residents were evicted before the reconstruction of the Olympic Stadium. All that remains of this town is the street named Can Valero which borders the Botanical Garden.

Visiting Montjuïc Botanical Gardens

This is a great place to take a book and wander round finding a quiet spot to relax and read, once you have finished exploring all the different types of plants and flowers.

The Best time to Visit Montjuïc Botanical Gardens is in Spring when all the plants are in flower.

What to see in the Montjuïc Botanical Gardens

• The Bonsai Tree collection: is a donation to the gardens by the Pere Duran i Farell family. Pere Duran i Farell was a Catalan engineer and businessman and renowned teacher in the world of bonsai. The collection was donated to the garden upon his death and comprises over 80 trees on display.
• Banksia species:, bushes with spikes of yellow, orange or red flowers and their strange, exotic-looking fruits.
• Cape Aloe: is a succulent plant from the cactus family which produces large orange flowers.
• Eucalyptus: is unmistakable because of the aroma given off by its leaves. In Spring it has beautiful white flowers all over the branches.
• Hyacinth of Peru: A species native to the Mediterranean that is know for its flowering stems of lilac-blue.
• Port Jackson fig: is a fig tree that sprouts roots above ground that then grow down into the soil from the branch adding stability to the tree.

• Stone pine: grows an umbrella shaped foliage rather than the usual vertical cone shape of a pine tree.
• Almond trees: Known for their aroma when in flower.

• The first Sunday of each month all day, Sunday's throughout the year from 15h.
• February 12 and 13 (Saint Eulalia); May 18 (International Museum Day), and September 24 (La Merce)

Montjuïc Botanical Gardens Tickets

Adult entry costs 5.00 euros with discounts for seniors, students and children. Tickets can be purchased through the Botanical gardens Website.

• Closed: January 1, May 1, June 24 and December 25.

Getting to Montjuïc Botanical Gardens

Address: Carrer Doctor Font I Quer S/N, Barcelona. 08038

Montjuïc Botanical Gardens can be reached by bus or by walking.

• The Barcelona Bus Touristic Red Route Stops in the Montjuïc Olympic Zone in front of the Olympic Stadium. From Here it is a 700m walk.


• The TMB 150 bus stops at the Montjuïc Olympic Stadium. From Here it is a 700m walk.


• The TMB 13 bus stops outside the Botanical Gardens entrance. The 13 route runs from Plaça España and weaves around the neighbourhoods at the foot of Montjuïc. From Plaça España, expect a journey time of 30 minutes using this bus to get to the Botanical Garden.


• Walking 2.7km from Plaça España on TMB Metro on the green (L3) and red (L2) lines. Walk towards MNAC Palau nacional building. You can use the escalators to ascend or descend the different terraced levels. When you get to the last terrace area the escalator to go up the MNAC can be found to the right of the terrace level walking past a patio bar. Walk down the right side of MNAC building and ascend the last escalator to emerge infront of the Olympic Stadium. Follow the road round to the left of the Olympic stadium and continue a further 600m.
  
  
• Walk from TMB Metro Foc on the light blue (L10) line following Carrer de Foc to the stadium (2 Km).


• Walk from Montjuïc TMB Funicular station along Avenida d'Estadí (1.1 km).
