About Parc Joan Miró with woman & bird Sculpture
Parc Joan Miró occupies four city blocks behind Las Arenas shopping centre and is named after surealist painter Joan Miró. It was formerly known as Parc de l'Escorxador because it housed the old city slaughterhouse, most likely due to the bull ring being so near.
The modern park was inaugurated on 12th of May 1983 and was remodelled in 2006 to include an underground parking and parks & gardens maintenance centre. The side of the park facing onto Calle Tarragona has a 22 metre high sculpture called Dona i Ocell (woman and bird sculpture) by Joan Miró that the artist completed in 1982 a year before his death.
The park is not grass but mostly sand with many palm trees, a child's play area, bowls area and an enclosed dog area. There is also a basketball court and ping pong tables. On the side facing Calle Villamarí there is a public library.
Note: As of late 2024, a small section of Parc Joan Miró is currently fenced off due to construction work. The city is installing subterranean rainwater storage tanks beneath the park as part of a broader initiative to improve stormwater management and sustainability in urban green spaces. Most of the park remains fully accessible to visitors.
