CaixaForum History

The building dates from 1911 and was built as a textile factory by the wealthy merchant Casimir Casaramona i Puigcercós The architect was Josep Puig i Cadafalch who designed the building in a Catalan Modernist style using decorative brick castellations and Arabic minaret style towers.

The Casaramona textile factory closed in 1919 and the building remained vacant until it was reopened as a warehouse for the 1929 International Exposicion. From 1940 the building was used by the Spanish National Police Force until the spanish banking giant "la Caixa" bought it in 1963.

In February 2002 after extensive refurbishment and construction of a new basement lobby entrance by Japanese architect Arata Isozaki, it opened as a museum. It comprises almost three acres of exhibition space, a media library, auditorium, classrooms and a restaurant.
