About Montjuïc Gardens near Funicular station
Montjuïc has multiple gardens which are a green space to relax and enjoy a picnic and this page is about the concentration of gardens that are easily accessible via the TMB Funicular de Montjuic upper station.
The gardens in Montjuïc were built for the 1929 International Exposition. The site was originally woodland and grazing land and contained a medieval Jewish cemetery which is where Mount Jewish or Montjuïc derives it's name. The lower gardens are from the 1929 International Exposition with the higher gardens being modern additions.
The Differnet gardens in Montjuic
- Jardines de Laribal: start from the side of Palau Nacional (Museum of Catalan Art) and extends round the mountain towards to the Greek Theatre. The gardens are from the 1929 International Exhibition and contain beautiful water fountains, stone paths and dense Mediterranean trees and plants. This is a good garden to go to to find shade and are the oldest of Montjuïc gardens.
- Jardines del Teatro Griego: began life as a rose garden and were also created for the 1929 International Exhibition. An old quarry was used to construct an amphitheatre (Greek Theatre) that now hosts many of the Barcelona Grec Festival performances every summer. These gardens have good views of the city and is a spot often used for group yoga classes. See the separate page about the Greek Theatre.
- Jardins de Joan Brossa: Is a more modern Garden that has been constructed on what was the Montjuïc Amusement Park which lasted 30 years until 1998. The amusement park has been completely demolished and in its place is now a large garden with established tall pines, and cypresses and cedar trees. These gardens have children's play areas and musical paths with bellows where children (and Adults!) can jump to create musical notes.
- Jardins del Mirador: gardens give excellent views facing the port area of the city and have fountains and waterfalls. The steep levels are divided by stone steps. The gardens are more modern dating from 1969.
- Jardins de Mossen Cinto Verdaguer: gardens, like many in Montjuïc, are situated in a former stone quarry. The gardens were inaugurated 22 June 1970 and give excellent views facing the city and have fountains and waterfalls. The gentle grass slopes have blooming plants that are in flower in spring. This park contains a pond and is a popular site for picnics because of the large open grassy areas.
- Mossen Costa i Llobera Cactus Garden: can be found below the Montjuïc Miramar to Barcelonata port cable car and contain a vast selection of cactus plants. See the separate page about the Montjuïc Cactus Garden.
- Historic Botanical Garden: can be found behind MNAC and is located in a former quarry. This is Montjuïc's first botanical garden and because of the constant shade from the high walls of the quarry, has plants that prefer a cooler climate. More about the Montjuïc Historic Botanical garden on this page.
- Modern Botanical Garden: can be found behind the Lluis i Companys Olympic Stadium and is pay entry museum and gardens run by the Museo de Ciencieas de Barcelona. More about the Montjuïc Botanical garden on this page.
