Scenic Transportation Day Trips in Barcelona & Catalonia
Tourism day trips on public transport links such as mountain funiculars, cable cars, rack railways and historic stations in and around Barcelona
Description of Transportation
Public transport is typically considered to be utilitarian (boring!) to convey us from point A to point B for work and leasure travel. However, Catalonia has some spectacular transportation links that can be considered tourist attractions in thier own right because of the spectaucular views.
Tourist transport attractions generally fall into one of three catagories:
- Cremallera: A racked railway that typical has a stap incline for ascending to a mountain retreat.
- Funicular: Incline railway of limited length with ascending and descending cars counterbalanced.
- Teleférico: Cable cars. These can be older designs where the car is statically attached to the cable and has an ascending and descending counter balanced car or modern systems of a loop of running cable that the cars hook onto at the stations and ride the cable unhooking at the stations for passenger disembarkation.
Catalonia also has some surviving grand stations that are of architectural interest and still active transport hubs.
This page gives an overview of these special transportation links in Barcelona city and outside of Barcelona to visit some spectacular places.
