Exploring Valls town during Calçots Festival
What to do and see in Valls during a winter day trip for the Calçots Festival
Description of Valls Day Trip
Valls is a town inland from Tarragona city on the Costa Dorada that was once a medieval walled town. Valls is the capital of the county of Alt Camp in Catalonia. Today the old town walls are gone but there is still enough remains of a historic Catalan town centre to make this a culturally interesting day trip.
The most famous events in Valls are the Valls Calçots Festival and the UNESCO cultural event of Castells human towers with Valls having the Catalonian Castells museum. Valls also has a great Historic Art Museum similar to the MEV in Vic
- Walking around the Barri Vell historic centre of Valls you will come across multiple buildings of interest:
- El Roser chapel: with 17th century tiles that commemorate the battle of Lepanto.
- church of Sant Joan: dating from the 16th century and housing the 13th century image of the Mare de Déu de la Candela
- Church of El Lledó built in the 14th century.
- Plaça del Blat: galleried square surrounded by Can Segarra and Ajuntament de Valls (town hall).
- Escola per l'Art i la Cultura a Valls: in a historic city building.
- Edelweiss Home goods store: has a striking tiled façade.
- Plaça de l'Oli: is another small galleried square with terrace bars and restaurants.
The best time to visit Valls is during the annual Calçots festival which along with the grilled street food and the museums make this an excellent winter day trip.
Happy Exploring!
